Not Quite News by John Fleming - Bookmobile commentary

May 30, 2014

The subject of this undated copy of the Not Quite News column by John Fleming focused on the  bill authorizing  the Orange County Commissioners to spend $10,000 annually to maintain a bookmobile to serve the outlying areas of the county where "folks do not have ready access to a library," and the efforts of the Sorosis Club to raise money to purchase the vehicle.

Mr. Fleming,  apparently a local radio personality on WHOO Radio, reports on the efforts of the ladies of the Sorosis Club using wit not unlike that of Will Rogers.

Fleming lists the members of the Sorosis Club's  Civic Betterment Committee: past presidents Mrs. A. B. Whitman, Mrs. Alex Akerman Sr., Mrs. C. D. Christ, Mrs. Frederick E. Godfrey, Sr., Mrs. Charles F. Batchelder, Mrs. C. C. Daley, Mrs. A. H. Reppard, Mrs. A. T. McKay, Mrs. William M. Lane, Mrs. Samuel F. Ricker, Mrs. L. A. Blake, Mrs. Aborn H. Smith Jr., Mrs. E. Harold Johnson and Mrs. Robert J. Pleus. In addition, representatives of the Executive Board of Sorosis, Mrs. Ruth McCullough Maguire and Miss Margaret Piper, were also members of the committee.

Author Fleming explains how the Sorosis members plan to raise the $6,000 needed for the purchase of the new Bookmobile: "Mrs. Smith has organized the club into 25 teams from the 700 Sorosis members. Each team is charged with accumulating $250 by any legal means."

"Already the teams are laying their plans for the invasion of Orlando and Orange County pocketbooks in this worthy cause. There will be Canastra lessons, French lessons, food sales, rummage sales, Coca Cola parties, picnics, square dances, benefit bridge parties and pyramid luncheons."
